UNFORTUNATELY, OUR THANKSGIVING BREAK HAS COME TO AN END BUT DON'T WORRY CHRISTMAS BREAK IS AROUND THE CORNER, AND WITH THAT SAID WE MUST CONTINUE TO WORK HARD AND PREPARE FOR DISTRICT BENCHMARK #1 ON DECEMBER 16, 2014. THANKSGIVING SHORT MATH REVIEW SHOULD BE COMPLETED, WE WILL GO OVER 2-3 QUESTIONS ON A DAILY BASIS

PLEASE SEE THIS VIDEO AS AN INTRODUCTION FOR OUR WEEKLY MATH LESSONS!

THIS WEEK IN MATH CLASS WE WILL BE WORKING WITH RATIOS AND RATES THAT WILL  BE REPRESENTED  ON TABLES AND GRAPHS. WE WILL ALSO BE MAKING COMPARISONS AND PREDICTIONS USING SUCH DATA INCLUDING REAL WORLD CONNECTIONS. STUDENTS WILL ALSO DETERMINE ADDIVTIVE AND MULTIPLICATIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH RATIOS AND RATES.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

STAY ALERT IN CLASS!!!

PROGRESS REPORTS WILL BE ISSUED OUT THIS WEEK, IF YOU ARE MISSING ANY WORK MAKE SURE TO TURN IT IN.

DISTRICT BENCHMARK #1 DECEMBER 16, 2014

AC2E-IT SEMINARS=TRUE SUCCESS!!

THE KIDS (INCLUDING ME) HAD A BLAST TIE-DYING OUR T-SHIRTS AND EVEN HAD A CHANCE TO MAKE SOME SILLY PUTTY/OOOZE!!!!

THIS WAS A GREAT LEARNING EXPERIENCE THAT I'M SURE THEY WILL NEVER FORGET. WE EVEN INTEGRATED MATH AND SCIENCE WITHIN THESE ACTIVITIES AND THE KIDS TRULY LOVED EVERY SINGLE MINUTE OF IT!!!

HARD WORK PAYS OFF

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 17-21, 2014

Report cards have been issued and I want to congratulate those of you that earned honor roll! I am very proud of you guys! I especially want to congratulate those of you that have worked hard to raise your grades, it shows who you are and what you want to accomplish in order to be successful!

This week in math class we will begin to work with UNIT RATES.You have done a tremendous job with ratios this past week and I hope it continues. Remember to always ask questions if you are in doubt!

EXAMPLES OF UNIT RATES:

Rates are used by people every day, such as when they work 40 hours a week or earn interest every year at a bank. When rates are expressed as a quantity of 1, such as 2 feet per second or 5 miles per hour, they are called unit rates. If you have a multiple-unit rate such as 120 students for every 3 buses, and want to find the single-unit rate, write a ratio equal to the multiple-unit rate with 1 as the second term.

120/3 = 40/1
The unit rate of 120 students for every 3 buses is 40 students per bus. You could also find the unit rate by dividing the first term of the ratio by the second term. When prices are expressed as a quantity of 1, such as $25 per ticket or $0.89 per can, they are called unit prices. If you have a multiple-unit price, such as $5.50 for 5 pounds of potatoes, and want to find the single-unit price, divide the multiple-unit price by the number of units.

$5.50 ÷ 5 = $1.10
The unit price of potatoes that cost $5.50 for 5 pounds is $1.10 per pound.

HONOR OUR VETERANS!

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 10-14, 2014

Welcome to the 3rd Six Weeks Mighty Falcons!!

This six weeks will be all about working hard and giving it your all no matter what. We have a lot of work to do and we can't slack off.  YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO SLACK OFF STUDENTS, THERE ARE STILL A FEW OF YOU THAT DON'T WORRY ABOUT YOUR GRADES UNTIL THE END OF THE SIX WEEKS AND I DO NOT APPRECIATE THAT, BECAUSE I KNOW YOU ARE A LOT BETTER THAN THAT!! I know some of you showed a lot of progress this past 2nd six weeks and I am very proud of you!  I am here as always to help you in whatever you may need for my class and outside of class.

This week we will be working on PEMDAS/ ORDER OF OPERATIONS that will include integers. LEARN your integer rules by heart and I guarantee you won't have any trouble!

We will also begin working with Ratios and Unit rates.

Example: A Recipe for pancakes uses 3 cups of flour and 2 cups of milk.

So the ratio of flour to milk is 3 : 2
To make pancakes for a LOT of people we might need 4 times the quantity, so we multiply the numbers by 4:
3×4 : 2×4 = 12 : 8
In other words, 12 cups of flour and 8 cups of milk.
The ratio is still the same, so the pancakes should be just as yummy.

Unit Rates
A rate is a ratio that is used to compare different kinds of quantities.
A unit rate describes how many units of the first type of quantity corresponds to one unit of the second type of quantity.
Some common unit rates are miles (or kilometers) per hour, cost per item, earnings per week, etc. In each case the first quantity is related to 1 unit of the second quantity.

LET'S HONOR OUR VETERANS EVERYDAY FOR THEY ARE THE REASON WE ARE RECEIVING AN EDUCATION!
